How was Pittie Posse Rescue founded?
Pittie Posse Rescue was founded in 2016 when, during their honeymoon weekend, founder Britt had a bold idea—starting a pit bull rescue! Her husband and co-founder, Sully, came up with the name, and they quickly secured their 501(c)(3) status.
Britt has been involved in dog rescue nearly her whole life, saving dogs off the streets of NYC as a child. It was always her dream to run a rescue and sanctuary—and now, that dream is a reality.
Who is the Pittie Posse mascot?
The iconic white pit bull in our logo is none other than our beloved rescue, Baxter Bean. Shortly after founding Pittie Posse, Britt & Sully received a message about a homeless 14-week-old puppy being given away for free during a date night. Sully instantly fell in love, and Baxter Bean never left—becoming both a cherished family member and the face of our rescue.
Where do you get your adoptable dogs from?
Most of our adoptable dogs are rescued from a high-kill shelter in Clayton County, Georgia, where lives are at risk every week. We also take in local owner surrenders and dogs from cruelty / neglect / abandonment cases right here in Maine.
What is your mission?
Pittie Posse Rescue and Sanctuary focuses on three key missions:
- Rescue: Saving animals from overcrowded shelters, owner surrenders, cruelty cases, and criminal seizures, primarily in high-kill areas like the South.
- Rehabilitation and Training: Providing basic fear & force free training to dogs in our care to ensure they are well-prepared for adoption and offering ongoing support to adopters.
- Advocacy and Support: Educating the public about bully breeds, promoting responsible ownership, and providing resources for rescue workers.
Where are you located?
Although we don’t have a physical location, our rescue is primarily based in Southern Maine, with dogs being fostered in homes across the state.
Foster FAQs
What is fostering?
Fostering is temporarily caring for a dog in your home until they are adopted. It helps the dog adjust to home life and allows us to learn their personalities. All costs are covered by us for the dog in foster care.
How long is a foster commitment?
Foster commitments vary. Some dogs need a home for a few weeks, while others may need a few months.
What if I can’t keep fostering but the dog hasn’t been adopted?
Life happens! If you can’t continue fostering, we’ll work as quickly as possible to move the dog to another foster home.
What am I responsible for as a foster?
Providing love and a safe, warm home! You’ll also bring the dog to vet appointments, training sessions, and adoption events when needed.
What are the requirements to be a foster?
To foster or adopt a dog from PPRS, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 21 years old.
- Have not adopted or introduced a new pet into your home within the last six months.
- Be able to communicate via Facebook Messenger.
- Commit to force-free, fear-free training methods for all dogs in your home—past, present, and future.
- The use of aversive training tools is strictly prohibited, including but not limited to shock/electric collars, invisible fences, prong collars, and chain/choke collars. This policy is non-negotiable for both fostered and adopted dogs.
- We strongly encourage adopters to enroll their new pup in a professional, positive reinforcement training class.
Can I foster if I have other pets?
Yes! We do our best to match you with a dog that fits your home. We’ll provide guidance on how to introduce them to other dogs or cats in your home.
Does fostering cost anything?
Nope! We provide food, supplies, and cover all vet expenses. You just provide love and a safe place to stay.
Why should I foster?
Fostering saves lives! By opening your home to a foster dog, you’re giving them a safe place to land while they wait for their forever family. It’s all the benefits of having a dog, without the long term commitment.
What if I fall in love with my foster and want to adopt them?
That’s called a “foster fail” (and it’s the best kind of fail!). If you decide you want to adopt your foster, just let us know!

Adoption FAQs
What if I don’t know which dog is right for me?
That’s where our matchmaking team comes in! Our team works with you, your family, and your lifestyle to match you with the perfect dog. If we believe a dog is not the right fit, we will be transparent to ensure the best outcome for both you and the pup.
What if I need support after adopting?
Once a Pittie Posse dog, always a Pittie Posse dog! Our team is always available to answer any questions you may have before or after adoption from training, to health, to lifestyle questions.
What is a foster-to-adopt trial?
If you live in Maine, adopting starts with a two-week foster-to-adopt trial after meeting the pup you’re interested in. This trial gives you time to see how the dog fits into your home, get to know their personality, and ensure it’s the perfect match for both of you.
What are the requirements to be able to adopt?

Do I have to live in Maine to adopt?
You don’t have to live in Maine—we are able to adopt dogs to out-of-state families!
At this time, we do not adopt outside of the U.S. due to import logistics and requirements.
What is involved in the adoption process?
The adoption process includes:
- Reviewing our adoption policies and considerations
- Submitting an application form via our website
- A response via email to set up your virtual home visit (please message our Facebook or Instagram page if you don’t hear back within a week!)
- Vet check (for current or prior pets)
- Virtual home visit with all members of the household present (at least one)
